Some little tips and tricks to help you pick outfits for your photo session.
I’m all for that gorgeous dress you bought and the fun heels, but to a photographer like me whose work is centered around movement, this can be…..tricky. I keep my couples moving throughout the session – lots of walking, running, twirling, dancing, sometimes even picking each other up. If your skirt is too short or shoes too uncomfortable, it’ll limit your mobility. Plus, you’re more likely to be stiff and awkward and fussing with your clothes. I want you to be in the moment!
Generally, neutrals are where it’s at. Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear any color, it just means that neutrals always look great in both nature and urban landscapes, and they always look better for couples or families, rather than trying to coordinate bright colors. When in doubt, go neutral.
But if you have a red dress you love, please wear it! Or any other statement piece, for that matter. Read on to find out how to add texture, or how to plan a color scheme for more than one person.
Some of my favorite ways to add texture are with layers – sweaters, cardigans, and denim or leather jackets. Long, flowy dresses and skirts are also great to play with texture and movement in your photos.
Something else to consider when putting together your clothing pieces – contrast! If your partner is wearing a deep earthy tone, try a white piece for yourself! This will keep the two of you from looking too dark or too light, or too coordinated.
Wear clothes you love and feel comfortable in. Choosing something you’d never normally wear can be fun, but I’m guessing you want these photos to feel like you.
If you have a statement piece of clothing or jewelry that you love, definitely wear it! If for a couples session, work your partner’s outfit around the statement piece so you two don’t clash.
+ Clashing patterns, such as more than one person in stripes
+ Perfect matching, such as everyone in white tees & jeans
+ Graphics and logos
+ Apple watches or hair ties on wrists, phones & keys in pockets, or anything else you wouldn’t want showing in your photos
+ Not to get too repetitive, but: uncomfortable clothing! Don’t sacrifice comfort for style – you don’t want to be tugging at bra straps or sleeves, or feeling stiff during your session
Photographers have worked with many couples of many styles, so if you’re stumped or stuck between two looks – ask for advice! You can also ask your photographer or refer to your contract about whether or not multiple outfits are permitted for your session.
