Should you add a super 8 film to your photo package with me? Let’s find out.
See what I did there? 😉
Super 8 film was first developed in 1965 by Kodak as a simpler method of creating home movies. Unlike their previous video cameras, super 8 is easier to handle and shoot, as you just pop the cartridge in and go! It was easier to use, cheaper, and actually created better quality images than regular 8mm film. We love an accessible medium!*
*Of course, these days it’s not so accessible, despite the rising popularity of photographers & videographers offering super 8 film. The cameras are harder to come by (they’re 50 years old!), harder to maintain, and the film isn’t so cheap to buy or develop! Still, the nostalgia of it outweighs the difficulties, in my opinion.
Super 8 is a nostalgic video format. It’s authentic, imperfect, soft and simple. It produces a fun, vintage home movie vibe through a roughly 3 minute film reel. It’s cinematic yet simple, with such a unique visual aesthetic that I’m absolutely in love with.
I find the nature of the raw, authentic footage a super 8 film encapsulates just perfect for a wedding day recap film, or to add some movement & emotion to a regular session. When it comes to a wedding, on the whole most super 8 highlight videographers will be more affordable than a traditional, full-day coverage digital videographer. But this will vary depending on how new they are at their craft, their location, and the length of coverage. There are certainly super 8 videographers who offer multiple rolls of film, therefore longer films.
I’m obsessed, and once you see a few films I think you will be too! Super 8 is available to add on to any wedding, elopement or photo session with me. Let’s chat if you dig it!
