For nearlyweds

April 21, 2025

Okay, so you and your partner have decided to forgo a traditional wedding celebration and elope. Congratulations! I’m a huge advocate for doing whatever is right for you – and intimate elopements are some of my favorite kinds of day to capture. Read on for tips on how to share the news with your family and loved ones.

City Hall Elopement

Stick to your gut!

You’re probably super excited, and rightfully so! Don’t let the anticipation of breaking the news to your people scare you. They might be bummed to miss the occasion, but ultimately, your loved ones should be happy for you and your partner!

Just explain that this is what feels right for you for whatever reasons, whether it be financial or simply not wanting a big extravagant party.

Lean on the people who do support you while the others come around, and don’t let other peoples’ feelings bring you down too much! This is your decision and your day!

Let them feel their feelings.

Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat it – some of them will probably be upset. Let ’em be sad that they won’t be there to hear you say “I do” – but you can make it up to them…

Celebrate with them in another way

Have a small celebration or dinner after, if that feels right. You’ll get your private ceremony, with a lowkey way to enjoy it with loved ones afterwards. You can also involve them in other ways like inviting them dress shopping, or getting their input on cool locations or floral ideas.

Share the photo gallery with them!

As a photographer, I’m obviously biased when it comes to capturing the memory of your big day. You’re probably bringing a photographer along, or maybe a pal as witness with a Polaroid… SO when you tell your loved ones you’re eloping, let ’em know that you’ll be sharing those photos with them. They’ll still be there in spirit, and a photographer or videographer can show everyone the scene almost as well as if they were present.

How to tell family you're eloping

Whether you’re considering eloping, have your mind set, or you’re just daydreaming about beautiful locations to exchange your vows with your partner – I’d love to chat with you about coming along as your photographer! I’ve been coast to coast with couples capturing all kinds of intimate ceremonies, so I’ve got lots of ideas and tips and tricks! Let’s chat about it!
